If I had owned that crowded inn
That night so long ago
And seen that poor young couple
As they entered from the snow
When I saw them stand before me
Knowing they could not pay
And that there was no room for them
Would I have found a way?
When I saw the sadness in her eyes
As her husband pled with me
Would I know their child was the Holy One
Who would walk upon the sea
Who would cause the mute to sing
Then bleed and die for me
Would He have been born in my inn that night
If the choice to let them stay or not
Had rested upon me?
Today as I read of the innkeeper
It seems so cruel to me
But can I say without a doubt
That I would have done differently?
I cannot rewrite history
I did not own that inn
But still the choice is mine alone
Will I let the Savior in?
When I hear Him whisper to my heart
Will He always find a place?
Will my heart ever be too full of sin
To find room for His grace?
Will I turn my Lord away from me
Refusing His embrace?
Will I always know His infinite love
Can never be replaced?
